IT Governance: What Are Its Roles and Responsibilities?

The IT governance department plays a crucial role in describing the application of processes and policies throughout the organization. Often, an organization’s size is proportional to the size and workload of an IT governance department. In other words, governance is managed by a whole team or just one individual depending on the company’s size. So, what are the roles and responsibilities of an IT governance department in a company? In this article at IT Chronicles, Terry Brown explains IT governance roles and responsibilities.

IT Governance Roles

IT governance aligns IT and your business vision. “The primary objective for all IT governance roles and responsibilities is to ensure that policies and strategies are designed and applied so that IT helps the business to meet its objectives,” says Brown. The IT governance roles include:

  • Implementation of guidelines and strategies: Businesses can accomplish goals only if they have specific guidelines to follow. Therefore, the IT governance team must plan and prepare a proper strategy for every department within an organization.
  • Adherence to processes: The IT governance department must ensure adherence to these processes. If the governance team detects misuse or improper usage of policies, they must immediately take corrective actions.
  • Resolving identified issues: The governance team must address all issues related to policies and processes. The IT service management teams often help here. They focus on incidents and approve change requests.

Difference Between IT Governance and IT Management

IT management and IT governance are not the same. Furthermore, both roles have different responsibilities. IT management is primarily concerned with maintaining the daily business operations, such as planning a new software release or instructing the development team on what to work on next. IT governance is focused on management’s actions and affairs that include design, implementation, and ongoing compliance.

IT governance is a vital component in an enterprise’s strategy to achieve its business goals and vision. To read the original article, click on
